Separate sources, working files, and exports
Keep original media in a clearly named source folder, editable project files in a working folder, and finished outputs in an exports folder. Use names that make sense to you and keep the structure consistent.
If your editor links to media by its location, moving or renaming source files can break those links. Organize them before importing, or use your editor's supported relinking process.
Name versions so you can recognize them
Include the project name and a version or date in working filenames. Distinguish review copies from finished exports so you don't accidentally share an earlier edit.
Keep useful milestones instead of repeatedly overwriting your only working copy.
Keep a separate backup
A second folder on the same drive is useful for organization, but it does not protect against that drive failing. Keep a separate backup of important source media and project files.
Check that a backup can be opened before you rely on it.
Review before sharing
Open the exported file and check the beginning, end, sound, and any text. Confirm that it is the version you intended to share.
Check that you have the rights needed to publish any included music, images, or other media.
